Health and Safety Policy — Garden Clearance Plumstead

This Health and Safety policy sets out the commitment of our garden clearance service in Plumstead to protect the health, safety and welfare of staff, contractors, visitors and the public while carrying out garden waste removal and general garden clearance activities.
Our objective is to prevent accidents and occupational ill health, to reduce environmental impact during rubbish removal and to ensure that every job is delivered with professionalism and care.
Scope and Objectives
This policy applies to all garden clearance work, including but not limited to shrub and hedge removal, green waste haulage, bulky garden rubbish collection and site clearance operations. It covers site risk management, training, PPE, traffic management and emergency response.
It is intended to be practical and proportionate, reflecting the varied nature of garden clearance and rubbish removal in residential and small commercial settings.
Responsibilities and Accountability

Managers and supervisors must ensure safe systems of work are implemented and maintained. All staff engaged in garden clearance activities must follow safe working procedures, report hazards and use equipment correctly.
Employees have a duty to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others, and to cooperate with management in enforcing this policy.
Risk Assessment and Control Measures
Prior to any clearance, a site-specific risk assessment will be carried out to identify hazards such as uneven ground, buried debris, hazardous waste, manual handling risks and contact with sharps. Control measures will be applied in line with the hierarchy of control: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative actions and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Records of assessments and method statements will be retained for audit and continual improvement.
Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing
Appropriate PPE must be provided and worn for all tasks. Typical items include high-visibility clothing, gloves resistant to puncture and cuts, steel-toe boots, eye protection and hearing protection where machinery is used. Respiratory protection will be supplied if dust, mould or other airborne hazards are identified.
Maintenance of PPE and correct disposal of single-use items are integral to daily operations.
Training, Competence and Supervision

Staff will receive induction training, task-specific instruction and refresher training relevant to garden clearance, rubbish collection and safe use of tools and machinery. Competence records will be maintained and supervisors will ensure that inexperienced personnel are adequately supervised.
Safe manual handling techniques and correct use of mechanical aids will be emphasized to reduce musculoskeletal injuries.
Equipment, Tools and Maintenance
All equipment used in plant and garden clearance operations (including chainsaws, chippers, shredders, powered hedge trimmers and hand tools) must be maintained in a safe condition and inspected before use. Defective tools are to be taken out of service and reported immediately.
Operators must hold any required qualifications for powered plant and must follow manufacturer guidance and safe operating procedures.
Waste Segregation and Environmental Protection
Garden waste will be segregated where required to maximise reuse and recycling and to prevent contamination. Controlled disposal procedures for non-green waste and potentially hazardous items (e.g. asbestos suspect materials, contaminated soil, chemical containers) are mandatory.
Spill prevention and containment measures will be used to protect ground and watercourses during rubbish removal operations.
Traffic Management and Site Layout
Vehicle movements, parking and loading/unloading zones will be planned to minimise risk to operatives and the public. Where necessary, signage, barriers and banksmen will be used.
Safe access routes and exclusion zones around machinery will be established and enforced on each job.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Response
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly and investigated to prevent recurrence. An emergency plan will be available for each site, including arrangements for first aid, emergency contact procedures and safe evacuation. In the event of environmental incidents, containment and notification protocols will be followed to reduce harm.
Monitoring, Audit and Continuous Improvement
Regular site checks, audits and reviews of incident data will be carried out to monitor compliance and performance. Findings will be used to update risk assessments, training and procedures.
Management review of this policy will be undertaken annually or when there are significant changes to operations, legislation or incident trends.

Commitment and Review
This policy represents our commitment to maintain safe, lawful and environmentally responsible garden clearance and rubbish removal services in Plumstead. All personnel are required to read, understand and follow the policy and associated procedures. The policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and relevant. By working together, maintaining vigilance and promoting a positive safety culture, we reduce risks and protect people, property and the environment.
